This plant is native to Europe, the Mediterranean and southern Asia. It has tiny hair like glands on its surface called trichomes which reflect the intense rays of the sun. This is a trait common to most plants in the Lamiaceae or Mint family. The trichomes synthesize and accumulate essential oils and phenols which protect the plant from oxidation while allowing it to survive in dry and hot conditions with direct exposure to intense sunlight.
Throughout history, Oregano was used primarily as a culinary spice and medicinal plant for coughs, stomach distress, and topically for wounds and inflammation but also as an ornamental in gardens. It was used to preserve meat in ancient times before refrigeration was available, as were other spices which contain high amounts of volatile oils like Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and Rosemary (Rosmarinus off.).
Function
This plant has many volatile oils. The main volatile oils that have been researched in this plant are Carvacrol, Thymol, Eugenol and 1, 8 cineole. The plant also contains appreciable amounts of Rosmarinic acid and other antioxidants. Oregano is high in antioxidant activity, due to a high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids. Oregano contains key constituents that function synergistically to support the body's natural resistance to microscopic invaders in the environment.
Specifically, the volatile oils found in oregano, contain potent phenols, including carvacrol and thymol, which help to support a healthy microbial environment in the intestines and throughout the body. Oregano leaf also acts as an antioxidant and contains the flavonoid rosmarinic acid that appears to normalize the chemical cyclooxygenase 2 (Cox-2). Cox-2 is associated with inflammation in tissues. In vitro studies of Oregano oil, along with other essential oils such as Tea Tree oil, appears to have a particular affinity for Candida species as well as a variety of gram postitive and gram negative bacteria. The majority of research to date on Oregano has been done in vitro or in animals, therefore there is insufficient research to scientifically validate all of these actions in humans.*

Anyone who has ever had the bad luck of a toothache understands that it is not merely your mouth that hurts, it’s the whole body. Materials Needed
Oil Of Oregano
Mix a few drops of Oil Of Oregano with a bit of olive oil, then saturate a cotton ball with mixture. lukewarm water can replace the olive oil if preferred.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar and hold it in place. Can also try regular household vinegar.
**Top Tip ~ Whenever you are using a cotton pad (or Q-tip) for cleansers, toners or eye make-up remover: First dampen cotton pads with water and press out excess gently by placing in-between the palms of the hands. It is less abrasive on the skin and will not pull the skin. You will use less product this way too!
Ginger Root
Take a fresh piece of ginger and chew it a bit. Salt Water: Mix a heaping tablespoon full of salt in a small glass of warm water; swirl around inside your mouth for as long as you can, spit out. Repeat as needed.It is a very effective natural remedy for natural toothache pain relief..
Tea Tree Oil
Just add a few drops of tea tree oil to a small glass of lukewarm to warm water and rinse your mouth with it.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Dilute hydrogen peroxide with a bit of water and rinse your mouth with it.
Vanilla Extract
is another popular home remedy for treating toothache as it helps numb the pain. Plus, the vanilla has a calming effect. Saturate a cotton ball with vanilla extract and hold in place on the affected area. Can also use a cotton swab dipped in extract.
Do this a few times a day until you get relief.
Other extracts that have the same effect are: Almond Extract, Peppermint Extract & Lemon Extract
Cayenne Pepper
Make a paste with cayenne pepper and water.
Black Pepper
You can use this full strength or make a mix of pepper and salt.
Mix equal amounts of pepper and common salt with a few drops of water to form a paste.
Apply the paste directly on the affected tooth and allow it to sit for a few minutes.
Do this daily for several days.
Garlic
This is a Must Try as most of our readers have testify to the efficacy of garlic for tooth infection in general and toothache in particular.. Take a clove of garlic, smash it and apply (settle it inside cheek). You can also mash some garlic with salt. I have also tried the garlic cloves and garlic powder mixed with olive oil and it works well.
Peppermint Leaves
According to research, peppermint leaf or oil resembles some of the qualities of clove oil in relieving tooth pain. Chew on fresh peppermint leaves. You can also use dried leaves, just hold them in place.
Rosemary Oil
Rosemary Oil is one of the best! Not only will it help help with the pain, but it also has antiseptic properties as well. In my opinion, it is by far one of the most effective herb for toothache. It is the best home remedy for toothache for kids..
Thyme
The use of Thyme oil in treating dental pain is also recommended. According to studies, this culinary herb contains antiseptic, anti fungal and medicinal properties which make it effective in warding off gum disease and tooth decay.
Potato
Cut a fresh piece of potato (raw, skin off) and hold in place. Can also pound a piece of raw potato, mix in a bit of salt and use the mash.
Lime
Cut a slice or wedge of lime and apply, bite into it if you can to release some of the juice. With it’s natural antibiotic properties, “Lime ” Rich in the antioxidant vitamins C and A, have pain relieving properties that is very effective when introduced into the diet and used on a daily basis. it is very effective as a fat-burner ingredient
Onions
Slice a piece of fresh onion and hold it inside your mouth. The onion needs to be freshly cut (so it provides a bit of onion juice).
At the first sign of a toothache, chew raw onion for a few minutes to relieve the pain. If you are not able to chew it, place a piece of raw onion directly on the bad tooth or gum.
Plantain
Chew up a fresh plantain leaf. If you’re too sore to chew, use the other side of your mouth. Once the leaf is macerated a bit apply it to the problem area and hold in place.
Baking Soda
Take a cotton swab and moisten it with a bit of water, dip it in baking soda (coat the swab really well with baking soda) then apply. You can also make a mouth rinse by mixing a heaping spoonful of baking soda in a small glass of lukewarm to warm water, dissolve the soda then swish the mixture in your mouth.
Baking Soda is definitely my miracle worker and so inexpensive at the same time.
Tea Bag For Toothache Relief
You can also place a tea bag next to the tooth for fast relief. It worked by being an astringent. Drawing out the infection, which causes the pain. It also aids in the destruction of bacteria in the oral cavity which works to prevent periodontal disease. Eliminate sugar from your diet, including pasta and excess wheat. This lowers the sugar in your blood, which feeds the infection.

1. Eleuthero
More commonly known as Siberian ginseng.
Eleuthero, an excellent herb for men’s health, is an adaptogen. It supports the adrenal glands, eases stress, improves energy, and boosts the immune system.
It’s also known as a strengthening herb. Historically, athletes used it to promote energy and stamina — and to reduce muscle inflammation. It’s often referred to as an enhancer of male virility.
Eleuthero also has anticancer and anti-tumor properties.
Make the dried root into a tea, or take it in tincture or capsule form!
2. Ashwaghanda
Also known as winter cherry, Withania somnifera, and Indian ginseng.
Ashwaghanda, another powerful adaptogen, supports health in both men and women.
It helps the body handle stress, boosts the immune system, and calms nerves (source). It also promotes sleep, and increases energy levels. Traditionally, it was used to promote vitality and increase sexual drive.

The Question: “What’s the best way to store herbs and spices?”
Julie D. asks:
I think my herbs and spices would last longer if I knew how to store them. What’s the best way to store herbs and spices so they stay potent and viable for as long as possible?
My Answer:
Storage times will vary, but herbs in optimal conditions — fully dry and stored at 60 degrees Fahrenheit or below in air-tight containers — will store for at least a year, and probably more.
Herbs and spices last much longer and stay more potent if stored dark and cool and air-tight.
If storing at room temperature or in fluctuating temperatures or in not air-tight containers, the length of time decreases.
Let’s go over the best options for storage containers now. Because you need containers to keep your herbs and spices (and supplements) potent and fresh for as long as possible!
Options For Storage Containers
When you’re considering storage options, consider 3 factors:
How often you are using these herbs and spices. For instance, when you’re getting in and out of them often, being able to do so easily is preferred. You’ll see how this matters as we go through the 3 options.
How much you want to spend on storage containers or methods, or whether you want to use what you have.
Which herbs and spices are most important to preserve the longest (perhaps you’re using them medicinally) so those you’re willing to make the biggest time or money investment to store.
Keeping these 3 things in mind, here are 3 options for storage of herbs and spices. (And there may be more that are slight nuances of what I’m sharing here; feel free to add your solutions in the comments!)
#1 — Mason Jars or Amber Jars (a.k.a “As Air-Tight As You Can”)
This is the most basic method of food storage, and it will help your dried foods last for a few weeks up to a few months.
Mason jars. Store your dried foods in mason jars with the metal lids/bands screwed down as tightly as you can, or with the helpful temporary BPA-free white plastic lids.
Ziploc bags. Double or triple bag your herbs, removing as much as air as you can from each bag. To prevent foods from touching plastic, wrap them in a paper bag, parchment paper, or natural wax paper first. This also keeps the bag clean for easy re-use.
Neither provides an air-tight environment. The herbs will tend to absorb moisture from the air, causing them to become limp and lose potency as the weeks go by.
To increase the effectiveness, put your jars or bags in the refrigerator or freezer. You need to watch out for freezer burn in the freezer; wrapping foods tightly and using more layers around the food helps minimize this.
Another downside of these options is that they don’t block visible light. Light degrades the contents. You can account for this a bit by keeping your jars in a cupboard, but realize that light will hit the contents as you open and close the cupboard.

#2 — Air-Tight Infinity Glass Jars
These Infinity Jars are fabulous and a relatively new find for me. I found them when I was looking for a way to store my maca in a dark, air-tight environment and still be able to access it easily on a daily basis.
I fell in love with the concept, so I’m beginning to use them for more of our herbs and spices now.
Because of the air-tight seal and dark glass that blocks out visible light:
They are scent proof;
They preserve freshness;
They preserve your herbs and spices (or home-filled capsules) for at least 6 months.
This is just if you keep your herbs and spices at room temperature. If you store them in a cooler location, I would venture a guess that things would keep longer (but that is speculation).

First, a test where they put a tomato in one of their jars and a tomato in a clear glass equivalent jar. After 7 months, the tomato in the clear glass had mold and microbiological growth while the Infinity Jars’ tomato wasn’t even drying out and had lost no color (not to mention no mold or bacterial growth).
The other test involved dried chives, one of the most fragile and perishable herbs. In this test, they compared putting dried jars in an Infinity Jar, an amber screw top jar, and a clear glass jar. In the Infinity Jar, the chives were green and fresh, while the other 2 jars chives were decomposing and degrading already as evidenced by their color and crumbliness.

#3 — Vacuum-Sealed Jars
Vacuum seal machines pull the air out of packages of food, then seal them up to prevent air and moisture from getting back inside. Herbs and spices do better in jars than vacuum seal bags (another option that I’m not going into) because the small particles can prevent a good seal on the vacuum seal pouches.
For this method, you need a vacuum seal machine as well as the appropriately sized jar sealer accessory (regular- or wide-mouth). You also need a Mason jar filled with the food being stored (leaving the top 1/2″ to 1″ free) and the appropriately sized lid (not band). Follow the instructions on your vacuum seal machine to seal up the jar. When sealed, the bump in the center of the lid should be depressed (same as when canning), showing that a vacuum seal has been achieved.
When you want to get into the jar, carefully remove the lid so it can be reused again. My preferred method is to use the straight edge of a butter knife to gently lift the lid off the jar. A lid that is slightly bent at the edges will work again, but if a lid gets too damaged, it is better not to trust it to hold a good seal.
The downside of this is that you have to redo the vacuum seal over and over. Of course the upside is that once you invest in the machine and accessory, you can use your Mason jars over and over. It’s potentially less expensive.
The Bottom Line — My Top Choices
Long-term storage of dried herbs and spices. My choice for herbs and spices that I “put up” from garden harvest is to keep them in vacuum-sealed Mason jars in a dark, cool location. It’s the less expensive and most adequate option for foods we store long-term and those we get into frequently. Of course, one could use the Infinity Jars here if the expense was not a concern.
Herbs and spices (and supplements like maca) that we use on a daily basis. My pick for the best way to store spices and herbs that I want to get in and out of constantly is Infinity Jars. This is because they provide an air-tight and dark environment, and I can easily get in and out of the jars on a daily basis.

Herbs not only add taste and texture to food, but are also abundant sources of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and unique medicinal properties. Certain herbs and spices can even help you maintain a healthy body weight, as they promote weight loss.
"Herbs" and "spices" are often used interchangeably, however there are differences between them. Herbs are obtained from the leaves of herbaceous or non-woody plants, and are used in larger amounts than spices. Spices, on the other hand, are obtained from roots, flowers, fruits, seeds, or bark, and are usually used in smaller amounts than herbs because of their higher potency and stronger flavor.
